Welcome to the Llangatwg Community School department of English.
English is taught in the Old Block and there are six lessons per fortnight in years 7 to 9 and seven lessons per fortnight in years 10 and 11. There are four full-time teachers of English: Mrs A Arnold, Mrs N Heale, Miss A Edmunds and Mr S Rees (Curriculum Leader for English).
During English lessons, the activities will include a great deal of writing, reading and talk of various kinds. Pupils will learn about language and about how to express themselves accurately and competently.
In terms of writing, we aim to teach pupils to write fluently, confidently and accurately.
In terms of reading, we aim to introduce pupils to a range of texts, learning to competently analyse in terms of character, plot and theme (fiction) and in terms of purpose, audience, tone and effect (non-fiction).
In terms of speaking and listening, we aim to provide pupils with the skills needed to present themselves in the wider world with confidence and flair.

The Key Stage 3 curriculum is split into the following units of work:

GCSE study begins after the Whitsun break in year 9.

Pupils sit the WJEC GCSE English Language qualification and the majority of them also sit the WJEC GCSE English Literature qualification.

The English department also ensures that pupils have access to resources via our student Dropbox, our Twitter feed and e-mail support as required.
